Z University.org Internship Advisory Council Names The 10 Most Pressing Issues in Experiential Education
Newtown, PA (PRWEB) March 1, 2007 -– The Internship Advisory Council of ZUniversity.org (ZU) has identified the 10 most pressing issues facing internships and other forms of work-integrated learning. At the top of the list is the lack of student tracking, feedback, and learning outcomes data. This is particularly critical for students with “credit-bearing” and/or non-paid internships.
The full list trends and issues that will shape ZU’s innovation and mission agenda are:
1) Tracking student learning outcomes data and feedback
2) Preparing students to perform well in internships
3) Enlisting more businesses through outreach to become ‘site sponsors’
4) Increasing the number of students who intern
5) Helping employers to more easily recruit and screen students
6) Advocating for intern compensation
7) Improving coordination among on-campus departments and individuals
8) Getting more students involved in non-profit service learning initiatives
9) Increasing post-graduate job placement through internships
10) Holding employer site sponsors more accountable for program quality and training
Z University’s Advisory Council consists of a body of 10 leading professionals who represent the broad interests and perspectives of the experiential education realm. These individuals counsel ZU to help establish an agenda to develop solutions and programs to effect the greatest positive change.
“There is no substitute for experience,” says Matthew Zinman, president of Z University.org and The Internship Institute, a non-profit affiliate. “The best way to set and reach our goals is to rely on the collective experience of thought leaders who I am also honored and grateful to call my mentors.”
The ZU Advisory Council was formed in 2006 to bring together some of the most respected individuals who represent of all forms of experiential education, have direct ties to all relevant professional organizations, possess experience among a cross-section of related higher education functions, and are from higher education institutions of various sizes, types and geographies. The Council advises ZU about organizational planning, product and resource development, advocacy initiatives, opportunities to cultivate collaboration, and long-term forecasting of trends and any needs to prepare for them.
The current members of Z University’s Internship Advisory Council are alphabetical as follows:
- Eugene Alpert, The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars
- Amjad Ayoubi, Tulane University
- Pamela Brumbaugh, Elon University
- Patricia Hammond, Association for Experiential Education
- Marcia Harris, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
- Lynne Montrose, Regis University
- Richard Porter, Northeastern University
- Karen Roloff, DePaul University
- Marianna Savoca, Stony Brook University
- Michael True, Messiah College - Internship Center
Zinman adds, “There are many more leading experts from whom we seek guidance on an ongoing basis. However, though subject to opinion and a bit biased of me to say – we’ve assembled a true ‘dream team’ of experiential education. We have a lot to achieve and little margin for error, so I’m all the more confident that we’ll stay on track with The Council’s guidance.”
